Rail dust removal: targeted treatment of rusty specks on paint
Rail dust consists of tiny metal particles, for example from brake dust, railway lines or construction sites, that embed themselves in the paint and rust there. We dissolve them with a special cleaner, lift off what remains with clay and prepare the paint for polishing or sealing.
Rail dust removal
When light paint is covered in tiny brown dots.
On white or silver paint they stand out most: tiny rust-coloured dots that will not wash off. The paint feels rough and looks neglected, even though you wash it regularly.
- Brown specks on the hood, rear and wheels.
- Rough paint that feels like sandpaper.
- Washing brings no visible improvement.
- The worry that the particles will keep attacking the paint.

How it feels afterwards
Smooth, clean paint again.
Without the embedded particles the paint feels smooth again and looks visibly cleaner. Your car is ready for polishing or a sealant and looks as bright as it should.
- Noticeably smoother paint.
- Visibly fewer brown specks.
- A cleaner, brighter overall look.
- A good basis for gloss and protection.
How it works
Step by step
- 1
First assessment
Send us close-up photos of the affected areas via WhatsApp. Rail dust is easy to spot on light-colored paint.
- 2
Inspection
On the washed car we check how severe the contamination is and agree the price before we start.
- 3
Chemical, then mechanical
First the cleaner breaks down the particles, then we lift off any remaining residue with clay.
- 4
Protect
After the treatment, the paint is unprotected. We recommend a sealant and discuss polishing if needed.
Your benefits
Rail dust removal at AG Autopflege
Two-step method
Chemical pre-treatment and clay complement each other and are gentler on the paint than scrubbing alone.
Noticeably smoother
After the treatment, the paint usually feels smooth again, a good basis for polishing and care.
A base for paint protection
Paint that is free of embedded particles is an important prerequisite before a ceramic coating or polishing.
Good to know
- If rail dust has been in the paint for a long time, small pits or discoloration may remain that can only be improved by polishing.
- Removing rail dust does not prevent new rail dust. A sealant afterwards does make regular care easier, though.

FAQ
Questions about rail dust removal
What exactly is rail dust?
Rail dust consists of fine metal particles that travel through the air and settle on the paint. Moisture makes them rust, and they become visible as small orange specks. It has nothing to do with rust in the bodywork itself.
Won't rail dust come off with a normal wash?
No. The particles are firmly embedded in the paint surface and survive even a thorough hand wash. Removing them takes a special cleaner and clay.
Can I remove rail dust myself with clay?
It is possible, but without enough lubricant and clean clay it is easy to cause fine scratches. We recommend chemical pre-treatment first and folding or replacing the clay often.
Should I have the paint polished afterwards?
Not necessarily. Clay can leave slight hazing, and older paint often benefits from a polish. At the very least, we recommend a sealant, because the paint is unprotected after the treatment.
